Exceptional Wines Blended in the Bordeaux Tradition

In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify hand-crafted wines blended from the traditional "noble" Bordeaux varietals including: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec or Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Sauvignon Vert.

"Meritage," pronounced like "heritage," was selected from more than 6,000 entries in an international contest to name the new wine category. Meritage is an invented word that combines "merit" and "heritage" — reflecting the spirit of members of The Meritage Association.

The Meritage Association 20th Anniversary

Celebrating our 20th Anniversary

In January 2008, the Meritage Association proudly began a year-long celebration of the phenomenal growth of Meritage during the past two decades. As part of our celebration we will launch a global campaign to get the word out about Meritage, creating educational materials, tools and opportunities for our members intended to help broaden consumer awareness of these exceptional wines in their own locales.

Understanding Meritage

During March in San Francisco and New York, members of the wine media, founding vintners and interested supporters will be invited to join us in informal discussions and tastings designed to increase understanding of Meritage and heighten interest in these superb wines.

Promotional Plans

Ongoing promotional plans include updates to the Meritage Association website and access to down-loadable educational materials for our members. Check back with us frequently to find additional information in the coming months.
